Kathrin D.S. O’Brien Has Joined Our Team

September 19, 2024—The BHRCMS partners are pleased to announce that Kathrin D. S. O’Brien has joined their leadership team in the position of Senior Director of Revenue Cycle Management.

Chief Executive Officer of BHRCMS Jordan Oshlag commented, “We are so excited to have Kathrin O’Brien join us. Kate’s expertise in Revenue Cycle Management and CareLogic will play a crucial role in our efforts to become the leading RCM solution for behavioral health agencies. Kate has a stellar reputation in the industry, and we are honored to have her join our team.”

When asked where her expertise will benefit BHRMS’s clients, Kate stated, “Throughout my career, I have developed a reputation for being a problem solver and empathic listener and effective speaker with a keen eye for detail and the ability to work under pressure with proven results. I have a broad knowledge base: third party, state, federal, grant billings in behavioral health and transitioning it into accounting systems.”

On joining the BHRCMS team, Ms. O’Brien added, “I am excited to join the Behavioral Health RCM Solutions team and help expand upon a highly successful business that constantly strives for and achieves excellence for their clients. I look forward to supporting the individuals, children, families, and communities our clients provide services for.”

Janine Kent, Chief Financial Officer at Gándara Center, an organization that delivers quality bilingual behavioral health, substance use, and preventative services for a diverse clientele of nearly 15,000 children, adults, and families each year at 100 locations across Massachusetts, underpinned Mr. Oshlag’s sentiments, sharing, “As a colleague who had previous interactions with Kate, I have found her to be professional and a subject matter expert. She was also generous in giving of her time to help a fellow colleague decipher the challenging world of MA third party mental health billing. Congratulations on this addition to your team!”

With over two decades of experience in financial management, Kate was the Director of Revenue Recognition at Wayside Youth and Family Support Network since 2014. Overseeing multiple revenue streams, including state, federal, and local funding, she successfully managed agency revenue exceeding $65 million annually. Known for maintaining a write-off rate of 1% or less for third-party revenue, Kate is recognized for implementing financial systems and streamlining revenue cycle management (RCM) processes. Her leadership has garnered multiple accolades, including the agency’s Annual President’s Award (2019), Senior Spotlight Employee (2023), and Spirit of Excellence Award (2014).

In her role, Kate was instrumental in reconciling third-party balance sheet accounts, supporting year-end audits, and coordinating the preparation of complex financial reports such as the Universal Financial Report (UFR) and Medicaid Annual Reporting. Her expertise extends to technical accounting matters, adhering to GAAP principles, and managing contracts across a broad range of revenue streams, including school contracts, federal funders, and third-party payers, and MA State Agencies including DCF, DMH, DPH, MOVA, HUD, and  DYS.

Kate holds a Degree of Science in Business from Dean College in Franklin, MA. She has also served in many leadership and community service roles, including as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, Boy Scout Den Leader, and a volunteer in the Franklin Public School System. Since 2005, Kate has been the Owner/Manager of “Gluten Free Massachusetts,” a support network for over 11,000 individuals.

A supporter of Domestic Violence Awareness and Trans Rights, Kate is the mother of two boys, and she enjoys baking, camping, gardening, fitness, travel, the arts, and spending time with her dog.
